Ureterovesical junction obstruction in a dog: Case report

Abstract

Introduction: The following case describes a 4-month-old canine patient, poodle breed, not sterilized, suffering from urinary incontinence from an early age. Several clinical tests were performed to reach the diagnosis, among them were blood chemistry, hemogram, elemental and microscopic urine analysis, x-rays, and an ultrasound given the plausible diagnosis of an ectopic ureter. With the anamnesis and the results of the tests, an exploratory laparotomy was performed, in which adhesions were found in the right ureterovesical junction, ruling out the ectopic ureter. The surgical resolve was based on the release of the ureter and subsequently, the colposuspension technique described by Holt in 1990 was applied, thus allowing better positioning of the bladder and ureters at the abdominal level. Objective: To describe the findings, resolve, and treatment employed in the clinical case. Methodology: This case report describes the examinations performed and the surgical technique used to correct the obstruction at the ureterovesical junction of the patient. Outcomes: After surgical resolution, the patient evolved favorably. It is determined that the ureter release and colposuspension were effective, which is corroborated by the absence of abnormalities in the clinical tests. Conclusion: Taking into consideration the patient's risk of developing renal disease in the short or long term, the management of the clinical case was age-appropriate since it allowed the medical team to conduct auspicious management of the clinical case described
