Occupational exposure to night work and risk of metabolic syndrome in healthcare workers: a systematic review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction. Night work is common in healthcare services and may disrupt circadian rhythms, sleep, and lifestyle habits, potentially contributing to metabolic disturbances. However, evidence regarding its association with metabolic syndrome among healthcare workers remains heterogeneous. Objective. To systematically analyze the scientific evidence on the association between occupational exposure to night work and metabolic syndrome in healthcare workers, considering exposure characteristics and potential confounding factors. Methods. A systematic review of observational studies was conducted. The search identified 154 records; after duplicate removal and application of the eligibility criteria, 11 primary studies from ten countries were included, comprising 11,473 participants. Findings were synthesized narratively, considering the association between night work and metabolic syndrome, exposure characteristics, confounding factors, and risk of bias. Results. Findings were heterogeneous. Several studies reported a higher prevalence or likelihood of metabolic syndrome among night workers, including studies that adjusted for selected confounding factors. Other studies found no statistically significant associations or reported results in the opposite direction. Greater night-work exposure was associated with adiposity indicators and metabolic abnormalities in some studies; however, a consistent dose–response gradient for metabolic syndrome could not be established. Differences in exposure definitions, diagnostic criteria, and methodological quality limited comparability across studies. Conclusion. Night work may be associated with a higher likelihood of metabolic syndrome among healthcare workers, although the available evidence does not establish a consistent association or definitive causality. Longitudinal studies using standardized exposure measurements and adequate control of confounding factors are needed. General Area of Study: Medicine. Specific area of study: Occupational health. Type of study: Systematic bibliographic review.
