A look at holistic nursing care

Abstract

Introduction:  nursing care is closely related to the conception of health-disease that has distinguished each historical moment, having diverse ways of caring from the beginning of civilization until now. In Ecuador it shows a rate of 15 nursing professionals per 10,000 inhabitants. Objectives: the work that aims to give a broad vision of our discipline and the need for professional growth. Methodology: this paper is a brief literature review of the existing evidence on the phenomenological basis of holistic care. Results: care has been studied under two connotations; the historical and the philosophical: the historical connotation is related to the care given to the human being, in order to maintain life and survival; the philosophical connotation refers to human care as a value, legitimizing acting, a form of expression, of relationship with the other being and with the world, as a way of living fully. Conclusions: holistic care has deep connotations that go beyond a technique or planned attention, this care implies being there with the other, it is satisfying their needs, it is sharing their feelings and emotions.
